Kicking off what is set to be another incredible year for Metalheadz is a duo that encompasses all that’s exciting about D&B right now. With hints of nostalgia blended with fresh ideas and sounds, Need For Mirrors are leading the new school of producers like no one else and this, their debut extended player for Headz will prove just that.
Drawing on drum & bass’ long history of sci-fi inspired backdrops, the METHXX01 EP is packed with breezy visions of the future. The opening bars of ‘Columbia’ are enough to conjure up images of another world, while the winding bass notes of the drop will convince you that world is populated by an army of robot drones.
‘Odd Future’ gives a nod to the inimitable Krust D&B sound of the mid-‘90s and the 1950s interpretation of futuristic soundscapes. Esoteric sound effects creating a strangely tense atmosphere while stabs of bass punctuate each bar, lifted from obscurity by the science fiction musical cutaways and Need For Mirrors’ impeccable production.
Taking a tribal approach ‘Sharp Teeth’ displays another side to the Need For Mirrors sound. Packed with percussive energy and stepping breaks, this track is as menacing as it is surprising. An undeniable mash up of influences, this shows why Need For Mirrors can cut it with the best that D&B has to offer.
Rounding off the EP in fine style, the duo team up with Manchester based MC DRS to craft ‘Don’t Fight The Feeling’, an infectious track that threatens to stick in your head long after the last bar rolls out. Coupled with an incredible video, this track is ready to set the internet alight, much like it’s been doing to clubs across the globe this year.
