Sprung from a radio play the pair produced in 2015, their new Ominira release is perhaps best described as a “musical essay”, exploring the musical and cultural heritage of five US cities. Moufang and Meinecke have created elegantly organized yet abstract sounding, electronic hybrids (sometimes bordering on sound excursions) picking up distinct musical influences from each city, whether it being funk, jazz or classic rhythm and blues, transforming and interpreting each locations specific feel, creating an audio geographical collage. A sonic map, or soundscape, if you will. The tracks are combined with live guitar, pocket trumpet and slit drum and interleaved with audio footage belonging to individuals from each city, most of these carrying strong manifests about their surrounding environment or the political climate. These sound notes are woven into the tracks finally to be graced with Meinecke’s own floating vocals who are conveying further reflections and observations.
