MermaidS surfaced at the end of 2011 into a lagoon of crystal clarity, brimming with starlit life and perennial funk. Combining elements of the past and future to create a present that is at once sky high, another ocean deep, their music has sent a stir through the blogosphere, finding it's way into tastemakers sets across the board
As huge fans and collectors of 80's pop, rock and boogie it was natural to explore those sounds and artists to put together this first EP. From the smooth sheen of Change, the rich tones of Mason, Heavy Traffic's sexed up yet innocent vocals and even Toto's sheer bombast, we found a palette that was colourful, deep and most importantly, fun. Breaking down the tunes and rebuilding them in a new, unique and personal shape is very satisfying, possibly the greatest joy of the edit. You add drums, bass, take it away, put it back, trawl through other tracks, up and down, back to front, and then BAM. The hook. Once we have found it we just roll, allowing the other influences that surround us have their say on the song. And coming from the fertile musical city that is Glasgow, that could be anything from the most up to date house and techno, smoky old hip-hop or the soundtracks to David Lynch movies.. Whatever happens, it doesn't work unless it's natural and from the heart, which is certainly the way of the MermaidS.. A fact we hope resonates out of the speakers on every track, allowing that mermaid logo to become a trusted beacon through murky waters...
