Brothers Amedeo and Matteo Giovanelli aka Mathame have quickly garnered attention through their dusky, atmospheric Techno releases on illustrious underground labels such as Anagram, ARTS and Afterlife Records utilising a wide range of hardware (from cheap analogue synths to obscure drum machines) as well as their experience as visual artists to create their free-flowing, signature sound.
Their EP (inspired by the clear and clean stars above the Mount Etna active volcano in South Italy) is the third release on esteemed DJ/producer duo Fur Coat's Oddity, an imprint that was founded to showcase some of the darker, leftfield Techno that exists in the scene - a sonic style that aligns perfectly with that of Mathame.
Opening the EP is 'Starburst', a track that has already gained early support from the likes of Tale Of Us and Mind Against, blending crashing cymbals and other timely percussive elements with the track's headstrong rhythm and a dark, twisting synth pattern that is introduced two-minutes in.
Next, the in demand Berlin-based DJ/producer Locked Groove (who's previously released on labels such as Turbo, Hotflush, Permanent Vacation and Afterlife) steps up to deliver a powerful remix of 'Starburst', harnessing the original's probing synths and combining them with a stunning selection of atmospheric sounds to create a more melodic, Trance-inducing number.
The B-side is 'Striker', a deep-groover that features atmospheric textures, an off-kilter synth melody and powerful bass frequencies throughout the track's seven-minute duration to great effect.
Next up is Cassegrain's remix of the aforementioned track. The Berlin-based duo (who've also released on labels such as Ostgut Ton, Arcing Seas and Infrastructure New York) maintain much of the original's brooding, pulsating sound, introducing further synth elements to create a more energetic offering made for the underground clubs of Europe.
