Lena Willikens is a secret encyclopaedia on everything Düsseldorf (see her involvement in Salon des Amateurs), everything Brussels, and everything New Wave… that is barely the whole truth- it is actually just the tip of the iceberg.rnrnIt is evident that she was raised on certain 20th-century avant-garde subjects and fantasies. (For example, like how to become a phantom) Since this education she has been travelling the world, continuing to distinctively converting those fantasies into the contemporary realness; fuelling twisted and contorted dance floor needs.rnrnIt is striking- playing one of her inimitable sets - here was some white-Reebok-ed, Taeuber-Arp version of an oddball-Techno DJ who delicately refuses the obvious musical pattern of dance communication.rnrnAnyone can attest that has listened to "Sentimental Flashback" Lena's resident broadcast on Radio Cómeme.rnrnCómeme has a notorious appetite for stars, shining in their own right.rnrn"Lena Willikens is going to be a star. She already is." says Cómeme artwork, costumes designer (and part-time clairvoyant) Sarah Szczesny. She already is.rnrnHer debut EP is indeed that special.rnrnPhantom Delia may be regarded as an overt tribute to her patroness of choice: Delia Derbyshire. However this is only a surface reference, Phantom Delia (co-produced by Matias Aguayo) offers an irresponsible plunge into a stone cold pool providing the listener with feverish schizo-joy of deviant data music from this moonlit monstrous, red-eyed and grinning deity.rnrnThis collection of tracks is overtly at odds with self-restraint. In fact it's a sublime pairing of technorotique lunatic lingo (Howlin Lupus), which is the vocabulary of her favoured musical past and present.rnrnIn this release Lena tells us stories… Nilpferd: Can a totally confused hippo recollect its senses?rnrnIt might difficult to know if these tales are serious, but then maybe she is just imparting the histories of her imagination in her own aural form: ex machina floorwork (a là Cómeme), and haiku-like electronic shadows. This EP plays with Lena Willikens secret knowledge of how to turn the finest gloom into finest white light, and vice versa.
