The iconic Kool Keith’s ‘Drugs’ gets placed on the Sugarcane Recordings Imprint for 2011. An idea spawned from Ninja Tune’s Amon Tobin and Doubleclick to place the anthem on rhythmic experiments similar to those of their recent breakthrough Two Fingersproject. Metallic drums, cataclysmic synth sounds, shattering glass, all while Kool Keith preaches on the use of drugs in pop culture. It works in a big way.
SWITCH (Major Lazer, Dubsided)Let’s get to it. This is a sure player made for the dance floor. Prime Switch production in the Dubsided fashion we know and love. Kool Keith chanting “I used to be up all night” with wonky twisting jack beats and an eerie synth floating in the foreground. Switch’s signature style shining thru on every measure. Heavy rotation with all the favorites like the Crookers, A-Trak, and Diplo.
Hot Chip (DFA, EMI)the indie idols couldn’t resist taking part on this instant classic. Joe Goddard puts forth a minimal acid housetake. A quirky vocal remix and additional instrumental in his newly found, off kilter house productions. Suited nicely for Kool Keith’s wild lyrical style. With a few tweaky 303 sounds and synth stabs, Hot Chip can do no wrong. A collector’s item in the making.
Two other VERSIONS (X and IV) are the real surprises here. Version X is a dubstep inspired mid tempo remix with classic casio sounds and grinding wobbly baseline. Influenced heavily by Rustie and Starkey, with sparkling synth work in the peak drop. VERSION IV is one of the smoothest 70’s disco house numbers Kool Keith could ever dream of being a part of. Deep funk disco with Keith singing “Make Me Feel the way I feel, Go head baby” so Kool.
