The Kid is back… August Darnell a.k.a. Kid Creole swaggers back with his first studio album in over 10 years this Autumn, I WAKE UP SCREAMING, an epic comeback recorded for Strut at Kid Creole’s Sweden HQ and mixed by Brennan Green (Chinatown Records). In anticipation of this all-new Creolian odyssey, Strut unleash the opening single, ‘I Do Believe’ this July, a trippy disco vision straight from the mind of Darnell touching on Greek mythology and other fantastical scenarios. Alongside the original album with its unmistakeable double harmonies and infectious slap bass groove, the 12” features some mouth-watering mixes: Brennan Green turns in a harder tech-edged club mix for the floor, echoing his releases on Chinatown; San Francisco DJ collective 40 Thieves (responsible for dance anthem ‘Don’t Turn It Off’ on Permanent Vacation) take the track into slinkier electro funk territory; Andy Meecham aka Emperor Machine goes deep and dirty with a live punk-funk treatment and nu disco pioneers Faze Action deliver a firing funky 4x4 version. Darnell first came to prominence during the mid-‘70s in New York, forming Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band with his brother Stony Browder before producing a slew of eccentric projects for ZE Records including the debut recordings by Kid Creole & The Coconuts. Signing to Chris Blackwell’s Island and Seymour Stein’s Sire imprints, Darnell would score a brace of hits mixing heavyweight tropical grooves with plenty of lyrical bite – ‘Stool Pigeon’, ‘Annie, I’m Not Your Daddy’, ‘I’m A Wonderful Thing Baby’ and more.
