Four helpings of rugged, trippy house from James T Cotton. 'South Brooks' is a subtly crafted, terrifically assured opener, with dainty, faux-naive synth melodies oscillating around a tough but low-slung, Rheji Burrell-style jack. 'Argo' is on a more open-ended, intuitive boogie tip, world-keeps-turning arpeggios bristling against deft 808 patterns with shades of Cloudface and Moon B. Things get properly freaky on 'Creal', a shining example of how JTC can push the familiar Windy City house template into the realm of abstraction without compromising fluidity or funk. The closing 'Gallup' is proper starlit, Virgo-style business, its dreamy synth fills and commanding, centered B-line begging to be busted on your motor's tapedeck as you cruise Illinois and Michigan's liminal spaces, drumming the steering wheel, thinking of what is, and what might've been.
