Minus recharges to experimental zones, this expedition brought to us by JPLS with his Minus debut single ‘Program’. This linear down shift in tempo is product of the American Midwest by way of Jeremy Jacobs, an Indiana native and adventurer searching for secrets in the spaces within the beat. JPLS’s analog attitude is stripped down amongst the ever-growing digital landscape of expanding sound fields. Recording as JPLS with recent net releases on Clever and Redevice he made his first Minus appearance on 2006’s ‘min2MAX’ compilation also performing live in Detroit in May for the ‘min2MAX’ launch showcase. The sound falls into a range of dub-punched techno while under the minimal aesthetic from the top down. His mode of procedure emphasizes the cerebral effects of “less is more” and works with precision versus surrounding his sound with clutter. PROGRAM sets precedent for bass and distortion by giving zero respect to gravity with its displaced clickclock. The plane is minimal, creeping and crawling behind disorientating moves. PROGRAM 3 bumps and pans around unpadded walls, snapping and reversing itself into a Twilight Zone episode of darkness. Closing out the session is PROGRAM 2, a ten-minute throb that echoes with dulled-snares, muted hi-hats and tone pulses that allow the bass in as the melody. Influences of Hawtin’s Concept 1 and Plastikman (Closer-era) projects float along, but JPLS draws his own perspective with subtle lines, disjointed rhythm and evolving surprises of tone.
