You know a producer has got something when the first note of the first track you hear makes you sit up and take notice. So it is with
19-year-old East Londoner Joss Ryan: the instant the jabbing orchestral motif at the beginning of “Melancholy Dreams” – the title
track of his debut EP – kicks in, it hits your emotional centres hard and lodges in your memory. As statements of intent go, it's a
pretty tasty one, and tells you that this is a talent who can stand out and make an impact way beyond the ins and outs of the microgenres
and endlessly reconfiguring trends of underground music.
To put it simply: Joss is a grime kid who expanded his horizons. . His popular mix of his own material for Mary Anne Hobbs's radio
show last December already shows that the three tracks on this EP are by no means a fluke, and there's a whole lot more to come
besides...
