Detroit's electronic provocateur Jimmy Edgar invites you to try a new position on the salacious remix EP for Hot, Raw, Sex (out July 12th), the lead single from his robo-disco songbook, XXX (out July 27th). Newly signed to !K7, Edgar wastes no time getting the party started with a scorching trio of retakes on an already incendiary proposal.
The latest in a line of syth-based seductions that began with Prince's "Dance, Music, Sex, Romance" and continued through Frankie Knuckles/Jamie Principle's house sizzler "Baby Wants to Ride", Edgar's "Hot, Raw, Sex" sounds like a lovesick paean from Aphex Twin to Janet "Miss Jackson, if you're nasty." Left to his own devices, Edgar reworks the song's acid-tinged pointillism into a classic B-side remix, where all the original elements are mixed, matched, stretched, clipped, looped and reshuffled au naturel for a good 6 minutes. Like technicolor foreplay it tickles and jumps in all the right places.
Under various aliases New York-based Travis Stewart has produced avant hip hop darlings Solange, Theophilus London, remixed stadium rave master Tiesto, basement brain dancer Mochipet and explored illbient IDM. As Machinedrum, his fast, furious remix of "Hot, Raw, Sex" burns both ends of his magic wand. It comes on jungle-istically horny, crackling with drum and bass bravado before breaking down into a cool puddle of dubstep ambience.
For those that like it slow and sleazy, fellow Motor City native Kris Wadsworth strips Edgar's slick R&B down to an auto-erotic serenade where Edgar's voice does double duty as Demonic seducer and falsetto enabler. The deep Chicago house underpinnings in Wadsworth's techno hold together his helter skelter remix as hard, jackin' beats drive the disembodied vocals and dubby squelches to their crescendo and evanescent finish.
Still in his 20's, Edgar has already travelled the world, partying in places you couldn't spell, dating models you can only dream of. He has produced and remixed superstars and indie icons like Will Smith, Michael Jackson, Daedelus, Kathy Diamond and Theophilus London. His new-breed electrofunk distills gritty rump shakers into polished pop gems. His DJ sets and remixes take the vibe beyond underground where things go bump in the night. Whichever position you wind up in, Jimmy Edgar's "Hot, Raw, Sex" has got your back.
