Jan Turkenburg is quite literally a musical UFO landed from a distant galaxy in his spaceship. Or more precisely from Zwolle's Geert Grote School (Netherlands), in which Mr Turkenburg is known to be a music teacher. In 2005, attracted by a free web-compilation project entitled "Interplanetary Material" focused on outerspace, Jan Turkenburg teamed up with all the pupils from his classes at the Geert Grote School (aged 4-12) to participate to the recording of "In My Spaceship": the tune he had composed on his home-synth as an homage to Star-Trek but also to his own "sleepless nights when he wishes he just could beam himself up to his spaceship and leave everything behind". The result is a stunning, innocent, dreamy melancolic space song with a tender melody sung by Jan and the pupils. "In My Spaceship" makes its way throughout educational and free music websites...and eventually lands on I-F's cult (now defunct) CBS webradio as one of the most played songs of the year. This way the Sister Phunk Team was caught and moved by the project and managed to convide Mr Turkenburg to give his song a pop life through a proper release with quality remixes. Thanks Pilooski who gives it the elegantly uplifting treatment, while up-and-comer Breakbot funkyfies the original, spreading his 70s west-coast vibe.
