Introducing the official debut single from Jam City.
Following on from his smash hit vinyl-only Refixes EP, released on Night Slugs in the summer, which sold out almost as soon as it was released, "Magic Drops" gives a glimpse of what's to come from the young South London producer.
Since being announced by the music press as "the most exciting prospect in House" as long as a year ago, Jam City has kept a low profile, all the while building up a large body of work that is as cohesive as it is startlingly original. Night Slugs will be putting out much of this material in the near future - more announcements on that soon.
For now, "Magic Drops" is an opening salvo that draws heavily on one of Jam City's major influences - early Grime production. The track's distinctive gliding square lead could be straight out of the Eski era, a Wileyism that Jam makes his own by framing it with a crunked-out snap beat, infused with the sounds of robotic, industrial pistons, and underpinned by gigantic 808 booms aimed straight at the dancefloor. And just when this startling groove begins to feel familiar, surprise synths and dreamy keys flood the track with some of that neon Night Slugs ecstasy!
Next comes "Magic Drops"' sister track, the steamy "Scene Girl", which borrows the pumping piston drums of the title cut, this time set to dirty makout sawtooths, moans and whimpers.
The EP closes with "2 Hot", the most atmospherically rich of the three tracks. Keeping in line with the halftime groove of its predecessors, this is a mesh of droning melodies, epic trancey synths that gather over the track like thunderclouds. Think Ruff Sqwad producers riding a Vicodin wave.
