Zooloft's 'Looking Through a Mindscape' EP is a decidedly dark new cut from Giorgio Gigli and Obtane.
The catalogue number is 00D and if the "D" signifies anything it should be dystopian. This utterly visual EP straddles dancefloor-optimised rhythms and atmospheric ambience.
Opener A1 is masterfully constructed. It's a strange landscape of grainy sounds where processed synth strings surge and glitchy rumbles suddenly arise. There's a mournful tone, a frosted undercarriage overlaid by the most ephemeral hooks and catches. Pure techno meets pure ambience.
In the hands of Milton Bradley these sounds are utterly transformed. B1 is no simple re-dub, this is a complex reinterpretation. Milton Bradley adds warm dub that rattles with sounds colliding into one another at obscure angles.
Closer B2 sees Giorgio Gigli and Obtane create music that's best heard not just afterhours or post peak-time, but post-civilisation. Looking Through a Mindscape' (psychoacoustic edit) cinematically transports you through a series of surreal scenarios and post-apocalyptic textures. This is techno for both wandering and wondering, and it's capable of pushing you to just the right side of overload.
