If The Three Degrees were The Supremes of that '70s Philadelphia sound, then First Choice were the Martha & The Vandellas.
The music is sweet, too sweet for some tastes, but hear those driven rhythms and the passionate vocals and you have to admit that it is good old soul music you are listening to. This is sweet soul just as it was drifting into disco.
I love the full orchestration, the strings, the brass, the percussion, often driven by a high hatting cymbol. I could never feel the same about today's electronic music, but each to each is what we teach.
Fist Choice had two British hits, 'Smarty Pants' and 'Armed And Extremely Dangerous'. They take me back to school discos and teenage angst and awkwardness. Somehow the music promised that things would get easier, and they did. Thanks ladies.
