Red Ember Records is still legendary in certain circles despite shutting up shop 15 years ago. After some time out of the public eye, though, Ewan Jansen himself is still very much in business, and here he is with four brand new cuts on his debut for Chez Damier’s Inner Balance label. After the appropriately pastoral intro to ‘Harvest’ we dive headlong into a flurry of vibrant, Detroit-influenced programming of the kind kept alive all these years by Rei Loci and Kirk Degiorgio. ‘Sines of Life’ takes a well-earned breather on the flip, its laid-back setting and all-enveloping bass a massage for the weary body and soul. Finally the mood turns playful on ‘Square Dance’, the chopped, breaksy and off-key groove completely at home alongside UK technicians Norken, Herbert and Ben Nevile. It’s rare for people to stay on their game for this long but, as this EP aptly demonstrates, Ewan Jansen is no ordinary musician.
