VGP-, VG, Record plays very well, jus ta very few hairlines,no crackling from cue points or disturbing noises, 2007 Heavyweight funk and psychedelic rock from South of the Border pressed loud on wax! The formula behind El Mexico 70 is simple ? good Mexican funk is rare as hell, obscenely expensive, and often pressed low on poor quality vinyl. This new series ? which has aspirations to stretch further into South America ? takes raw, funky source material, and remasters, edits and chops it together into dance-floor filling smashes! The psychedelic funkers Rabbits and Carrots get three songs on Side A. Their ?Cuatro Culturas,? a Mexican stand off, if you will, with James Brown?s ?Give It Up Turn It Loose?, is probably one of the only examples of the Godfather losing to those whose music he spawned. Well, at least, tying for first place! Their version of Rufus Thomas?s ?Funky Chicken,? however, squarely knocks the Crown Prince of Dance on his ass! Lastly, the drums that start their cover of Jorge Ben?s ?Pais Tropical? make the song worth inclusion ? but the swinging boogaloo funk that follows is nothing to sniff at. Side B starts off with one of the heaviest psychedelic rock jams to originate in Mexico. Las Moskas ?Buscando La Felicidad? switches tempo effortlessly, and never loses the groove. Jae?s Soul gets a worthwhile edit, and bonus beats to extend those funky drums, and the EP closes with yet another band besting Rufus Thomas ? this time with a superb rendition of his ?Push And Pull.?
