a Dusky - 9T8
b Dusky - 9T8 (Benny Ill Deep Garage Remix)
After the heavyweight last outing from Klose One, School Records is back with its fourth offering, this time from modern house heroes
Dusky, complete with two remixes from veteran Benny Ill, one of which is vinyl only.
Dusky have been one of the success stories of recent times, releasing their melodically polished
house beats on labels like Aus and Anjunadeep as well as taking their impressive DJ sets to the
biggest clubs and festivals in the world. They also of course launched the School Records label early
in 2013 with their superbly received ‘Calling Me’ and return now to provide a second serving.
The track they deliver here is ‘9T8’, a deep down and dirty bit of rugged and rigid house with jarring bass rattles, dark male vocals
twisted all out of shape and well swung drums. It’s fulsome and physical and represents a return to the sound they originally
displayed on the 1st school release.
The other cut included on wax is ‘9T8’ (Benny Ill’s Club Mix). Benny Ill has collaborated with some of the day’s finest beatsmiths
including Loefah of Swamp81, Mala of Digital Mystikz, Hijak of Deep Medi, Horsepower Productions and many others. He’s also been
a DJ fixture at FWD for years and is often heard on the legendary Rinse FM. His credentials are unquestionable, then, and the first
remix he serves up layers in some extra atmosphere and sordid basslines to the original. The boom-bap kick clap combo also seems
sharper and the arrival of a sharp acid line is more than welcome at the mid point.
The same talent’s digital only Deep Garage remix does exactly what it says on the tin. Squirming
synth lines still wrap round the drums, but this time those drums skip and slice, duck and dive and
make for a more propulsive and direct version of the track.
This is another tough, no nonsense package from the increasingly essential School Records that
showcases the talents of new and old school producers alike and with early DJ support from the likes of Disclosure, Redlight, Pete
Tong, Maya Jane Coles, T Williams, NYTA & Toddla T this looks to be their biggest record to date.
