DJ Nature is just passed the 30 year mark in his DJ career, a number that few jocks can match. Better known as DJ Milo, he got his start as part of Bristol's Wild Bunch alongside Nellee Hooper and Daddy G. This enormous amount of experience lends itself nicely to talking about his latest release, one of two for New York's Golf Channel Recordings, Win Lose and Dance. The two tracks on offer here are assured in a way that only comes with the wisdom of age.
"Win Lose and Dance" finds Stevie Wonder calmly singing the last word of its title over Rhodes chords and a funky bassline. Like Massive Attack's finest early tracks, it somehow both sounds like soulful easy listening pap and the most urgent thing around. It's a powerful trick, and one he pulls on the B-side with "Destiny Reprise" to similar effect. This one is more downtempo house than funk, but the same warm and fuzzy vibe pervades with sweeping strings leading the way. Sometimes things are just that simple. And sometimes it takes someone with enough confidence to put out a 12-inch proving it.
