Spain's A Harmless Deed label is proud to announce the release of its first artist album. It comes from family member Flavio Tortora, aka Spanish DJ and producer DJ F, who up to now has also produced a sleek brand of airy dub techno and house on labels like Freebeat, Frigio and Semantica.
Drawing on everything from lo-fi Detroit techno to vintage electro, over the years DJ F has proved to be an ever-evolving talent who keeps himself to himself but whose music is always full of freshness. It's the same story with his pithy debut album, 1974, due for release in Spring 2014, which covers plenty of ground across its six sumptuous tracks.
'Lightyear' is a slow burning bit of experimental dub with muted chords, sinewy synth lines and itchy percussion. Its plump and set in a deep groove that slowly consumes your whole being.‘Peaceful Mind’is then a whacked out bit of dusty old electro with Legowelt style mysticism imbued within a trippy beat. It's multi-layered stuff that really drags you right into its core before 'Subconscient' picks up the pace. It's a gliding, surfing bit of house music with celestial melodies up top, shuffling drums and icy hi hats below and plenty of deep intentions. The widescreen synths make it as cerebral as it is subtly physical and there's so much space in the track you really feel like you are bathing in it.
‘Cerca’is more playful and experimental, with a jostling, freewheeling beat structure it's riddled with weird melodies, malfunctioning synths and plenty of shiny, reflective surfaces. There's plenty of colour in it, too, and it's the sort of late night head track that really makes dancefloors get freaky.‘Primavera en Kyoto’is again melodically unsettling with haunting little keys raining down the face of the track. Rattling metal chords flesh out the beat and final track‘Control’again stretches out into a spacious, serene groove that reminds of Detroit's finest at the same time as looking to the future.
This is an album that will not only make you dance, but will stir all sorts of emotions deep down inside of you, and testament to the range of DJ F as a producer is that plenty of ground is covered without any of it ever sounding forced.
