Atlanta’s Distal is one of the most hotly-tipped producers of the moment. His tracks have been played by Sinden, Appleblim, 2562, Joe Nice, Ramadanman, BenUFO, Julio Bashmore, Breakage, and more, and he’s been featured in FACT, Resident Advisor, and XLR8R, to name only a few. After the scorching singles ‘Bad Acid’ on Tectonic and ‘Boss Of The South’ for Sinden’s Grizzly imprint, he is now set to release his debut 7” on Starkey and Dev79’s Seclusiasis. Combining time travel with dance music, Distal breaks down the more ambiguous sounds from the past and fuses them with thoughts and equations of the future. Because of his unconventional approach to dubstep, funky and techno, Distal has been forced to take a few risks, but along the way has created a very specific and friendly sound for himself. On this outing, ‘Eel’ winds and insists its way along five minutes of looping dark electro disorientation, as ticking metallic beats and sliding signals ride a shifting ground of sub-bass distortion. Conversely, ‘Kurgan’ begins as an altogether more restrained experience, stepping out on a lively half-cut hip hop rhythm … then a minute in an organ explodes into demonic life, a maniac cackles in the distance, and Gaslamp Killer asks himself how that thunder got stole from right under his nose.
