The Stones Throw release, Lets Take Off 12”, takes its listeners on a musically galactic ride, seeing the world through the eyes of its mastermind, Dam Funk, the boogie funk aficionado. Putting his array of vintage synthesizers and drum machines to good use, Dam (pronounced ‘Dame’ as in Damon) has created a 12” which blends funk and 80s musical standards, a combination perfect to attract a wider range audience. In the city of Los Angeles, Dam has been honorably deemed a modern funk maestro, redefining funk, as we know it today. This can be attributed to his presence at his weekly Funkmosphere in the Culver City neighborhood, helping him to hold ground in the Los Angeles music scene. Dam dips through various forms of making his funk more obscure and unique than it already is on the “Let’s Take Off” 12 inch. His love for combining drum machines, synthesizers and the bass takes this 12” to another level of galactic funk. On ‘Latrifying’ Dam takes a page out of Prince and Paula Abdul’s book, creating a fresh boogie track perfect for the dance floor. He layers his tracks with a funky sole beat on top, while the drum machines form the foundation, which can be best seen on ‘Hood Pass Intact’. With a vibe similar to that of NWA’s, ‘Hood Pass’ pays tribute to the west coast gangsta rap sound, creating an ideal song for the car ride. Dam’s 12” leaves the listener awaiting the release of Dam Funk’s LP, “Toeachizown”, a fresh recipe of tracks.
