Chocky – definitely one of the rising stars of the Dope House family – is the grandmaster of musical meditation with a deep philosophy behind his work. Hailing from London, he moved to the mountains of souther Europe in the beginning of 2015 to free his mind, to get deeper into his conception of art. With Secret Voyager EP (released on secret reels) he delivered the first feld report earlier this year – and already caused some stir. But that was only the prelim, on Sativa he’s coming up with the real shit: this smoky three-tracker 12” contains the ultimate essence of dopeness in three acts.
A1 – SATIVA
Sativa is an ode to the hazy side of life – it’s a deep dive into the azure, warm caribbean sea water. Uplifting & airy hihats, fortified by a concrete- like bass carry the dancer through the faky and funky world of herbal delight. Sativa’s a multi-purpose, soulful tool – a versatile, wonky, smooth & dope slowhouse-dub masterpiece.
B1 – THAT’S RIGHT
That’s right is little more straight forward than Sativa, stuffed with pure deepness. At the latest from the bassdrum drop at min 1:37 the auto-pilot takes control of your mid-speed ride on hobbling chocky-grooves, steering you safely through the land of weed and honey.
B2 – YEH WANNA
Yeh Wanna is one of those winking b2-tracks that are a bit abroad from the musical focus of the artist, but nevertheless highly above the average. It brings masterpieces back in mind like “ne jamais travaillez pas” by Christopher Rau…. With this one Chocky gives a brilliant example of his understanding of the art of sampling – it’s the equivalent to ready made and collage in fine arts. Yeh Wanna is all about catching the right mood, creating a soul-petting time lapse with a highly contemplative quality.
