A pitched down lead vocal, crisp drum programming and slinky synth work demonstrates that Mary Jane (not cocaine) is a helluva drug on the A side’s “Main Thing.” On the flip, “F.T.F. (Freak The Funk)” explores a familiar sample from the golden era of hip-hop, recontextualized in vocoded synths, funky wah-wah clavinet, and shimmery strings layered perfectly over a pulsating disco groove.
