Thanks to their immaculate taste in music and impressive presence behind the decks, BLOND:ISH's Anstascia and Vivie-Ann have established a firm reign over global dance floors - but even more astounding is their continued bravura in the studio as evidenced by their latest offering WUNDERKAMMER: here, you'll witness them delving ever deeper into the psychedelic influences that already informed their LOVERS IN LIMBO EP (KOMPAKT 253) and INWARD VISIONS (KOMPAKT 268) releases.
Last year has been quite a ride for BLOND:ISH, with the duo working through an incredibly busy tour schedule: a rewarding experience for sure, but certainly not the ideal backdrop for reclusive producing sessions. To reconnect with their studio flow, our protagonists decided to take some time off and headed to Tulum, Mexico - one of the last citys built by the Mayas, this arcadian place now became the personal paradise for two crazy gringas setting up a little studio and going on field recording trips. It's where they would try to commit to tape the sounds of chanting street merchants, roaring dirt bikes and whispering ancient ruins. Yes, you got that picture right: Blond:ish were stalking the coconut guy with a field recorder. You're welcome.
It's no wonder, then, that WUNDERKAMMER presents itself as a tremedously atmospheric package, with its three cuts drenched in intriguing textures and exotic fumes. Fittingly, the opening title track kicks things off with some heavy reverb engulfing the raspy guitar strumming, placing us right where BLOND:ISH left us with their masterful INWARD VISIONS EP almost exactly one year earlier: again, it's a somewhat surreal setting that we're presented with, a place full of trapdoors, double entendres and contorted perspectives -
all held together by relentless beat programming and semisynthetic voice snippets luring us deeper into the subterranean maze.
A ruminating and downright creepy anthem, this perfectly primes the ears for BIRDS EAT BIRDS, the flipside's belligerent main floor cut that rules over its bleeping synth troops with the allure of a mad, yet triumphant king. The lunacy certainly doesn't stop there - it just changes its apparition with STOLEN ROMANCE, WUNDERKAMMER's sweeping, abyssal closing track. In what can be reckoned among the sneakier hallucinogens on offer, BLOND:ISH let all towering delusions collapse and adopt a self-reflective stance, creating their own post-apocalyptic downbeat manifesto in the process.
