It’s summer – in case you hadn’t realised – and, never a label to be discourteous to the Sun Gods, Horizontal is proud to offer a robustly breezy release from accomplished French producer, Anthony Collins. Continuing the rich vein of form that has earned him notable success on labels such as Mule and Freak N Chic, Collins once again proves his mettle in typically discerning fashion. Grooves that are intricate yet fluid, sounds both tech and organic, and mood-embracing funk are the signatures we have come to expect from the Frenchman, and all are present in abundance on Horizontal 012. Take, for instance, A-Side Gone Too Long, with its weaving guitar-hooks, celestial chords and fanciful piano-rolls comfortably occupying the same berth as a relentlessly techy beat and electrofied bass riff: the simultaneous versatility is effortless. The good vibes continue to cascade on B-Side track, Fenceless, with a repeat of the piano-guitar frolics culminating in a breakdown to pop a smile on even the most club-weary of faces. Waiting For You sees Collins build a sparser soundscape laced with elegance and restraint.
